The general manager of the Brockton fair and a former Brockton police officer have pleaded not guilty to charges they arranged a sham marriage for a German woman seeking to stay in the United States. Maura Carney and Lon Elliott were arraigned yesterday in federal court. Carney is the daughter of Raynham dog track owner George Carney. Prosecutors said that in 2007 she recruited Elliott, a police sergeant, to marry Lilly Rempel, who was in the US on a work visa at the time. Elliott and Rempel, who also pleaded not guilty, face charges of marriage fraud. Carney is charged with aiding and abetting marriage fraud. (AP)Equipment problems lead to plane delays
Logan International Airport experienced significant delays, and some planes had to be diverted, after the airport had problems with landing equipment, called localizers, last night, an airport spokesman said. It was not immediately clear when the system can be restored. The localizers tell arriving pilots how high or low they can approach in landing, said Phil Orlandella, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs the airport. He said that the localizers are operated by the Federal Aviation Administration and that the agency was responsible for restoring the equipment. A spokesman for the FAA could not be reached for comment last night. Orlandella said planes were delayed on average more than four hours.CANTON
Dunkin’ Donuts halts some sales
Dunkin’ Donuts has temporarily halted the sale of hot chocolate and Dunkaccino brand beverages after learning that some equipment used at a supplier’s facility was contaminated with salmonella. The Canton-based company said yesterday that none of its products was contaminated and that the decision to withdraw the beverages was a safety precaution. The supplier - Plainview Milk Products Cooperative of Plainview, Minn. - announced it had voluntarily recalled its instant nonfat dried milk and whey protein, as well as some thickening agents, due to potential salmonella contamination. Library override passes in recount, too
A hand tally of ballots Monday night supported the result of a machine count done in the June 6 election: A $6.2 million override to build a new public library passed with a hand count of 2,775 in favor and 2,767 opposed, a margin of eight votes. The original count had the override proposal passing by 10 votes. A team of 10 election workers spent four hours counting the ballots, said Town Clerk Ron Fucile. The new library’s projected cost is $11.2 million.PROVIDENCE
Efforts to shorten state name stalls
An effort to change Rhode Island’s formal name appears to have stalled in the State House. Senate lawmakers were not planning to vote yesterday afternoon on whether to permit a constitutional referendum next year allowing residents to decide whether to shorten the state’s formal name, the “State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.’’ African-American lawmakers have argued that the word plantations conjures up painful images of slavery. House and Senate lawmakers have separately adopted identical bills permitting the referendum. One of those bills must be adopted by both chambers to authorize a statewide referendum.
