PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A gay rights group plans to meet with Rhode Island's governor, who this week vetoed legislation allowing same-sex couples to plan the funerals of their partners.
Susan Heroux (HEH'-row), a member of Queer Action of Rhode Island, said the meeting with Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEHR'-ee) has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday.
In a written statement, Heroux accused Carcieri of raising money for a "hate group" and said the governor's veto was motivated by "bigotry."
Carcieri spokeswoman Amy Kempe declined to comment on Heroux's criticism.
Carcieri spoke at an October fundraiser for the Massachusetts Family Institute, which opposes gay marriage. He said he vetoed the recent legislation because it represented an erosion of the principles of heterosexual marriage.
