PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The son of a longtime Rhode Island state lawmaker has won the election for his late father's seat.

Democrat Scott Slater won Tuesday's election for the state House of Representatives seat held by his father Thomas Slater for 15 years until his death from cancer in August.

The younger Slater, running for office for the first time, captured 661 votes in the district that includes Providence's West End, South Elmwood and Reservoir Triangle neighborhoods.

Independent candidate Wilbur Jennings Jr. got 232 votes and Republican Maurice Green received 116 votes.

The 34-year-old Slater, a budget analyst for the city, said he was motivated to run to uphold the legacy of his father.

Election results must still be certified.
