A 65-year-old Boston man died Oct. 31 of swine flu, the 14th person to succumb to the virus in Massachusetts, city health officials said yesterday. The man, whose identity was not disclosed because of patient confidentiality laws, was hospitalized Oct. 14 and was described by the Boston Public Health Commission as having multiple health conditions. He is the fifth Boston resident to die of the H1N1 virus.LYNN
Mayor says he will file for election recount
Mayor Edward J. Clancy Jr. said yesterday that he will file for a recount of the Nov. 3 general election, which the eight-year incumbent lost by 27 votes to challenger Judith Flanagan Kennedy, a 10-year city councilor. “It’s so close, within a statistical margin of error, I think I owe it to everyone to take a look at the ballots and see if the vote stands,’’ Clancy said in an interview. Kennedy, the first woman elected mayor of this North Shore city, received 8,043 votes to Clancy’s 8,016, according to election results released by the Lynn city clerk’s office.HAVERHILL
Teen father charged with assault on infant
A teenage father from Haverhill was charged with assault and battery on his infant daughter. Ivan Rosario, 18, pleaded not guilty in Haverill District Court yesterday. Prosecutors from the Essex district attorney’s office say that on Sunday afternoon, Rosario began shaking his crying 3-month-old daughter, Yolisse Rivera, in the apartment he shares with the baby’s mother. The mother, who was not identified, called 911 after the baby’s eyes rolled toward the back of her head and she was having difficulty breathing, prosecutors said.TROY, N.H.
Marine sergeant is reported killed in Iraq
Officials of veterans groups said a local Marine has died in Iraq. Victor Bishop, district commander for the American Legion, and David Catani, commander of American Legion Post 56, said that details of Marine Staff Sergeant Stephen L. Murphy’s death are sketchy, but that he was believed to have died Sunday. Bishop said Murphy was 36 and joined the military right after graduating from high school. (AP)PROVIDENCE
Kennedy upset about bishop’s remarks
US Representative Patrick Kennedy said he finds comments by Rhode Island’s Roman Catholic bishop questioning his faith “very disconcerting.’’ Kennedy, a Catholic, had planned to meet tomorrow with Bishop Thomas Tobin to discuss abortion and the health care debate. The bishop’s office announced Monday that the meeting was postponed indefinitely by mutual agreement. Kennedy said yesterday that he initially agreed to the meeting on the terms that Tobin would not dispute his faith in public. He said the bishop did not follow that agreement. (AP)DEDHAM
Man gets 3 years in drunk driving death
A Wrentham man has been sentenced to three years in prison for causing a fatal crash. Ryan Shaughnessy, 25, was sentenced Monday in Norfolk Superior Court, after pleading guilty to motor vehicular homicide while driving drunk. Prosecutors say Shaughnessy rear-ended a pickup truck driven by Alphonso Anderson, 71, on Interstate 93 in Canton in November 2007.
