PROVIDENCE, R.I.—University of Rhode Island students will ask a federal judge this week to reject as unconstitutional a Narragansett ordinance allowing police to put orange stickers on unruly homes.
Lawyers for the students will make their argument Tuesday before U.S. District Court Judge William Smith.
Police have cited more than 300 homes under a town law that tries to curb rowdy parties often thrown by off-campus students from the University of Rhode Island. The first sticker is a warning, while a second carries a $300 fine.
Students complain the stickers are an attempt at public shaming and invite repeat visits from police officers.
The town wants the lawsuit dismissed. It says the harm caused by the stickers doesn't amount to a constitutional violation.
