PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The administrator of Rhode Island's court system says more cases would have to be postponed unless staffing in the judiciary is increased.
Joseph Baxter told the House Finance Committee on Monday that the courts won't be able to cut an extra $850,000 during the current fiscal year, as requested by the state Budget Office.
The Providence Journal reports that Baxter told the committee that the court system needs 46 more employees to come up with a full staff.
He said the courts can't continue to function short-staffed because that would cause postponed cases, as well as deferred child-support payments and delayed child-welfare cases.![]()
