PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Lawyers for survivors and relatives of the 100 people killed in a Rhode Island nightclub fire are asking permission to destroy evidence from the blaze they say is no longer needed.

More than 700 items from The Station nightclub were saved in a warehouse after the Feb. 20, 2003, fire so lawyers could evaluate it. Lawsuits over the fire have now settled for $176 million.

Lawyers for the victims and the dozens of defendants filed a joint motion Friday seeking permission to close the warehouse and get rid of the evidence. They say it's no longer needed since all the suits have been settled.

The fire at the West Warwick club began when pyrotechnics from the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling.
