CENTRAL FALLS, R.I.—Elected officials as well as residents of Central Falls are vowing to fight a tax increase proposed by the financially strapped city's state-appointed receiver.

Mark Pfeiffer, a retired judge appointed to fix the city's finances, last week proposed a 10 percent property tax increase.

Mayor Charles Moreau said he would not accept a tax increase as long as he's in office.

Council President William Benson says any increase imposed by Pfeiffer would be taxation without representation. But Pfeiffer says his appointment gives him the power to act as mayor and council.

The city council on Monday unanimously voted to hire its own lawyer.

The city had a $2.1 million deficit last year and a projected $6.3 million deficit for the next fiscal year.
