PAWTUCKET, R.I.—Rhode Island Democratic gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio says he visited the Republican National Committee in February to meet with a longtime friend there, but won't say what they talked about.
Caprio told The Associated Press on Thursday that he met with Ken McKay, a staffer for Republican Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEER'-ee). He wouldn't discuss details of the meeting. McKay did not immediately return a phone message.
His opponent, independent Lincoln Chafeee, on Thursday accused Caprio of shopping his candidacy and criticized Caprio for having a secret meeting with Republican opponent John Robitaille (ROH'-bih-teye) in a coffee shop in Massachusetts. Robitaille has said Caprio intermediaries tried to encourage him to drop out of the race.
Caprio denied that and said he had the meeting to keep lines of communication open.
