NEWPORT, R.I.—A Rhode Island nonprofit focused on nautical education has received a $250,000 pledge from the family and friends of a Navy lieutenant who died during World War II.
Saturday is the 66th anniversary of the death of Lt. Charles John Weschler, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and Purple Heart for his actions during combat in the Philippines. He died in 1945 as a prisoner of war.
The quarter-million-dollar pledge is being given to Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island and its namesake ship, which will provide nautical schooling for children. The ship's Great Cabin, which will be used for classes and as a navigation station, will be named after Weschler.
The Oliver Hazard Perry is the state's school ship and is under construction. The hull is at Promet Marine Services in Providence.![]()
