PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The headquarters of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington is playing host to a large-scale ceramic replica of a Pacific coral reef that was created by a Brown University master's candidate.
Courtney Mattison is working on her master's in environmental studies at the Ivy League school, and created the 10-foot wide and 15-foot tall installation to raise awareness of marine conservation. The display features items such as larger-than-life, 2-foot wide sea anemones, algae and a variety of coral species. She handcrafted each item in a ceramics studio at the Rhode island School of Design.
It went on display Friday and will be shown through Friday, June 15.
Mattison says she hopes the piece will help people appreciate reefs and understand threats to their health.
