PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island students struggling with addiction may now attend a special high school designed to help them get clean while working toward a diploma.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) signed legislation into law Wednesday that will create a so-called "recovery school" for students from around the state who need extra help beating their drug or alcohol habits.
The new school is a pilot program for two years. After that, officials would decide whether it has been successful and should be continued.
Supporters in the legislature say recovery schools will give a second chance to students who often can't get the help they need in a traditional school.
Ten states already have recovery schools.
