PROVIDENCE
New US Census data show the number of same-sex households recorded in Rhode Island increased 48 percent from 2000 to 2010, figures that are in line with national averages. The Census Bureau reported this week that it recorded 3,664 same-sex households in the state during the 2010 Census, compared with 2,471 in 2000. The percentage of total state households led by same-sex couples was 0.89 percent, up from 0.61 percent in 2000. The Providence Journal reported that Rhode Island’s percentage of same-sex households is the second lowest in New England, ahead of only Connecticut. Analysts say most of the increase may be because more people are now more willing to report being gay or lesbian. (AP)![]()
