PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Two high school students from Providence's Met School are set to be among those ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Monday after winning honors in a nationwide business innovation contest.
Anthony Defilippo and John Novas took third place last in the National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, which drew tens of thousands of applications from budding business owners.
Their project, Earth Custom Designs, focuses on making bracelets with non-precious stones from developing countries. They donate 25 percent of their net proceeds to nonprofit organizations that support the community where the stones originate.
Cheryl Comai of Partners in Philanthropy tells the Providence Journal ( http://bit.ly/oCtUam) the teens also are expected to be invited to lunch with President Obama on a yet-undetermined date.
