PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Providence city officials are welcoming an Australian metal recycling company to Rhode Island.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) has announced that Sims Metal Management Limited has purchased land on Providence's waterfront and will make the site its New England export terminal.

With more than 200 locations on five continents, Sims is one of the largest recyclers of metal and electronic equipment in the world. The company's new Providence site contains a pier, rail connections and two deep-water berths.

Taveras says the company's decision to locate in Providence represents a major accomplishment in the city's efforts to revitalize its waterfront industries.
