PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Providence Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) wants to open a so-called "mayoral academy" public charter school in Rhode Island's largest city.

Taveras submitted an application Monday with state education officials for two elementary charter schools for children from Providence, Warwick, North Providence and Cranston.

The schools would be operated by Achievement First, a non-profit group that runs 20 public charter schools in New York and Connecticut.

The first school would open in 2013 with 176 students and the second school would open in 2014.

Taveras' application is supported by the mayors of Warwick, Cranston and North Providence.

Last summer the state School Board rejected a proposal to open an academy in Cranston. Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) suggested that a Providence school could serve more students from surrounding areas.
