WESTERLY, R.I.—Local opposition is growing to tolls proposed for Interstate 95 near the Connecticut border.
The Westerly Sun reports (http://bit.ly/pSgTnA) that the Town Council is considering whether to join Richmond and Hopkinton in opposition to the tolls.
Council President Diana Serra said tolls are unwelcome to local commuters. She also says tolls would lead to more traffic on local roads as motorists leave the highway to avoid the tolls. And she questioned toll booth safety.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has asked the federal government for permission to install toll booths between exits 1 and 2 on both sides of the highway in Hopkinton.
Hopkinton officials earlier this month sent to the Federal Highway Administration letters from residents opposing the idea.
Richmond and Hopkinton town officials have and asked Westerly officials to join their opposition.![]()
