PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Rhode Island ambulance company owner has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for fraud.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that John Almon of Cranston must also pay more than $700,000 in restitution to Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island. He is the owner of Med Care Ambulance, LLC.

Prosecutors say the 55-year-old Almon pleaded guilty in June to obstruction of a federal audit, making false statements and two counts of health care fraud.

They say Almon overbilled Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island for ambulance runs for dialysis patients by categorizing them as specialty-care transports. Such transports are reimbursed at a higher rate.

Prosecutors say Almon was also ordered to complete three years of supervised release and 1,000 hours of community service.
