JOHNSTON, R.I.—A Rhode Island lawmaker is calling for a state investigation of unpleasant odors coming from a landfill.

Rep. Stephen Ucci says a rotten egg odor emanating from the Johnston landfill can be detected miles away. Ucci, a Johnston Democrat, is asking a legislative oversight committee to determine whether the landfill's operators are doing enough to minimize the odor.

Ucci says he has received more constituent calls about the landfill than any other issue in his seven years in the General Assembly.

The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation manages the landfill on behalf of the state. The agency has blamed the odor on recent heavy rains and has vowed to take steps to reduce it.
