CRANSTON, R.I.—The Rhode Island Department of Corrections has moved the last of the inmates at a Cranston prison to another facility as they prepare to close that location.
The remaining inmates at the 324-bed Donald Price Medium Security Prison were moved over the weekend to the Moran Medium Security Facility.
WPROI reports ( http://bit.ly/tlkO6) the Price prison was slated to close by the end of Sunday, part of a cost-cutting plan approved by the General Assembly.
The state correctional officers' union opposed the move, which state officials say will save millions of dollars.
The family of Donald Price, who was stabbed to death by an inmate in 1973, also opposed the plan to close the facility named in his memory.![]()
