CRANSTON, R.I.—Former Gov. Donald L. Carcieri (kuh-CHEHR'-ee) says he will not challenge Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse next year.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/uUyZYD) that Carcieri told a meeting of the state Republican Party Central Committee Wednesday he loved being governor but doesn't believe the Senate would suit him.
Carcieri, a former business executive, completed two terms as governor in January.
He announced his decision as Rhode Island Republicans were deciding whether voting in GOP primaries should be limited to people who are registered as Republicans at least a few days before the primary.
Barry Hinckley, co-founder of a Boston-based software firm who moved to Newport in 2006, is so far the only Republican challenger to Whitehouse, a Democrat and the state's junior senator.
