A Rhode Island state lawmaker and retired police sergeant pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges he sexually assaulted a Johnston woman in July. A lawyer for Representative John Carnevale, Democrat of Providence, entered the plea on his client’s behalf in Providence County Superior Court. Carnevale is charged with first- and second-degree sexual assault and one count of assault with the intent to commit sexual assault.
