PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The animal rights group PETA is trying to promote a meatless Thanksgiving by giving away free "Tofurky" roasts in Providence.

Two activists masquerading as Pilgrims in high heels and "anything but puritanical garb" will be handing out the faux fowl roasts on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals on Tuesday afternoon. They'll be downtown at the corner of Dorrance and Washington streets.

One pilgrim, Hayden Hamilton, calls Thanksgiving "murder on turkeys" and urges consumers to celebrate the holiday without causing turkeys to suffer.

The group says 300 million turkeys are killed in the United States each year, including 40 million for Thanksgiving tables.
