PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Fifteen buildings in Rhode Island's capital city are expected to be illuminated by red light to mark World AIDS Day.

The initiative is part of an international effort to shine attention on the still-spreading disease, attempts to prevent infection and help those afflicted by the virus.

Providence City Hall, the Statehouse, the Rhode Island Convention Center and several of the state's tallest office buildings will all be lit red Thursday evening.

At the same time, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is set to host an event marking World AIDS Day at the Providence Biltmore Hotel. He'll be joined by Rhode Island's first lady Stephanie Chafee (CHAY'-fee) and one of the first nurses in the state to work with AIDS patients.
