FOSTER, R.I.—Rhode Island is set to buy property that should make it easier for hikers to reach the state's highest point.

Hikers seeking to climb to the highest point on Jerimoth Hill in Foster were chased away by a former property owner who lived at the trail's entrance. Parking on a nearby road was hazardous.

The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/uGz8Jy) that the state is about to pay $100,000 for 5.5 acres at the summit, which is just 812 feet high. Brown University has been the owner since 1952.

In exchange, the university may use a 2,000-square foot portion of the property for 50 years.

The national Highpointers Club declared Jerimoth Hill "America's most inaccessible high point" in the 1990s because the property owner barred access.
