PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The University of Rhode Island is proposing retirement incentives to prod senior, high-paid faculty members to leave and be replaced by lower paid teachers in areas that support the university's growing interest in research, science and technology.

The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/uGz8Jy) that the plan presented Monday to the Board of Governors would offer a one-time payment of 40 percent of salary to professors and professional staff at least 60 years old with at least 10 years' experience. Retirees also would get financial assistance of up to $7,000 annually to pay for health insurance.

The board directed officials to determine whether retirement incentives also could be considered for the Community College of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College.

URI is increasingly interested in offering languages, particularly Chinese, and biomedical studies and pharmaceutical research.
