NARRAGANSETT, R.I.—The public is getting a look at a proposal for a transmission cable bringing power from an offshore wind farm near Block Island to make landfall at Narragansett Pier.

The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/uGz8Jy) that Deepwater Wind, the developer of the five-turbine wind farm, is scheduled to detail its plans at Narragansett Elementary School Wednesday.

The plan calls for the $45 million cable to run 21 miles along the ocean floor and 2.4 miles under area roads to South Kingstown where it will be linked to the regional power grid.

Block Island has a small power load and on windy days much of the electricity generated by the 30-megawatt wind farm would be sent to the mainland's National Grid electric system.

On days with no wind, National Grid would send power in the opposite direction.
