PROVIDENCE, R.I.—U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse says new federal air standards will help reduce the pollution that Rhode Island receives from out-of-state power plants.
The rule announced Wednesday by the Environmental Protection Agency will force hundreds of America's oldest and dirtiest power plants to control mercury and other toxic pollutants for the first time. The standards will rein in emissions from U.S. coal- and oil-fired power plants.
Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, says the state has received pollution from outside the state for years and the new measure will address the largest sources of toxic air pollution. Whitehouse has supported clean air standards in the Senate.![]()
