CRANSTON, R.I.—A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections says the nine officers and three inmates treated after a fight at a maximum security prison have all been released from the hospital.

The fracas broke out Friday at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston after an inmate resisted two officers who were handcuffing him because he refused to turn over an unauthorized item. The item was not a weapon.

Other inmates joined in the fight and several officers came to help break it up.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Tracey Zeckhausen tells The Providence Journal the incident is being investigated by the department's internal affairs unit and state police. No further details were available.
