PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Twenty-eight people have been charged with driving while intoxicated after being arrested in Rhode Island over the New Year's Day holiday weekend.
The arrests were announced on Thursday. Authorities say 17 arrests were made by municipal police departments and 11 arrests were made by state police.
Authorities say state and local police increased patrols over the holiday weekend to crack down on drunk driving.
Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association president Chief Edward Mello says he's disappointed by the high number of motorists who were driving drunk or under the influence of drugs. He says law enforcement must remain vigilant.![]()
