PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Rhode Island lawmaker has introduced legislation to restore $20 million that was cut last year from programs benefiting people with developmental disabilities.

Rep. Scott Guthrie says agencies helping citizens with autism, Down Syndrome and other disabilities have had to lay off staffers and reduce services. The Coventry Democrat says the budget cuts are potentially "life-threatening" to some disabled Rhode Islanders in need of help.

Guthrie announced Thursday that his bill would restore most of the $24 million cut last year as part of efforts to eliminate a $331 million deficit.
