CRANSTON, R.I.—Officials have disciplined a student at Cranston High School West for making online comments against an atheist student who recently won a legal battle over a prayer banner that had been displayed at the school.

School officials and police have been investigating a number of threats on social media directed at 16-year-old Jessica Ahlquist, who sued the School Department and wanted the banner removed. A federal judge last week ordered officials to take down the banner.

The school district's operating officer, Ray Votto Jr., told The Providence Journal ( http://bit.ly/wsKFjH) that a student faced internal discipline, typically a form of detention, for online comments. The student wasn't named.

Votto also confirmed that school officials broke up an attempted walkout by students supporting the prayer banner on Friday.
