PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A homeless day center pushed for by Occupy Providence as a condition of its departure from a public park downtown has opened.
The center at Emmanuel House in south Providence began welcoming visitors on Friday morning. It is being run by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence and is expected to accommodate between 35 and 50 people a day.
Occupy Providence told the city it would dismantle its encampment at Burnside Park if the city opened a facility that would serve the homeless during the day during the winter months. The city says it is not funding the center but is helping the diocese secure money.
Occupy protesters are expected to dismantle their tents this weekend.![]()
