PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island lawmakers are considering new rules for teen tanning that would be among the strictest in the nation.

Legislation up for a review in the Senate on Wednesday would bar anyone under the age of 18 from using a tanning salon unless they have a prescription from a physician.

Many states require parental consent for minors to use tanning salons, and some have imposed a minimum age of 16. Rhode Island now requires minors to be accompanied by a parent when visiting a tanning salon.

Last year California became the first state to prohibit minors from using tanning salons with or without parental permission.

Supporters in Rhode Island say teens shouldn't be allowed to use tanning booths until they're old enough to weigh the risks of skin cancer.
