PROVIDENCE, R.I.—State lawmakers have introduced a bill calling for a statewide vote on whether the Newport Grand slot parlor should be allowed to become a full-scale casino.
The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/z0Upn0) that state Rep. J. Russell Jackson and other Newport County lawmakers submitted the legislation in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Legislators have already signed off on a plan to hold a referendum next November on turning the Twin River slot parlor in Lincoln into a casino.
The Newport Grand's plans to add table games comes as gambling centers in the region face potential competition from proposed casinos in Massachusetts.
