Ex-URI president still on the school's payroll
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.—University of Rhode Island officials have confirmed that former President Robert Carothers remains on the school's payroll for nearly $185,000 a year for his duties as "president emeritus."
URI spokeswoman Linda Acciardo told The Providence Journal ( http://bit.ly/wt3sN7) that Carothers' responsibilities include teaching, research and other jobs assigned by university officials. URI also contributes about $16,700 to his health insurance and 9 percent of his pay to a retirement plan.
Carothers was paid about $231,000 a year before stepping down as president in 2009. Acciardo says Carothers was among the lowest paid presidents of state flagship universities in the country.
