RI to move shellfish to boost population

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is planning to move 150,000 pounds of adult quahogs (CO'-hogs) to replenish local shellfish populations.
State officials say they will hold two quahog transplants next month.
The harvested quahogs will be dug up and transported by boat to shellfish management areas.
The state is looking for shellfishermen willing to assist in the transplants.
Transplanted shellfish will be off-limits to harvesting until December to allow them to spawn.
The state says previous quahog relocations have boosted shellfish populations.
