PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Law enforcement officials have gathered in Providence to say goodbye to a city police officer who died last week in a cruiser crash.

A celebration of life honoring Providence police Sgt. Maxwell Dorley took place Friday at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. At a packed service of mourners his daughter read a letter in which she called him a hero.

Mourners sobbed as they left the ceremony to the sound of taps and church bells ringing.

The 41-year-old Dorley was killed on April 19 after his cruiser crashed while he was responding to a request for backup at the scene of a reported disturbance.

Dorley was a 15-year veteran of the police force. He leaves a wife and two children.

Dorley will be buried in Snellville, Ga.
