JOHNSTON, R.I.—Newly revealed documents show a former state landfill official received at least $726,000 of the $12 million the landfill paid to use a licensed trash-handling process.

The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/INZ1eB) the money went to Dominic Ragosta, former chairman of the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corp., according to records obtained by the newspaper related to the deal with the Virginia company that received the $12 million for its licensed technique for shredding demolition debris.

Ragosta declined to comment. He resigned as board chairman in 1996 but remained on the board and made a motion in 1998 to authorize a pilot project with the company, Recovermat.

The newspaper reports Ragosta received the money after promising to help make sure the landfill would continue using the technique and paying royalties to Recovermat.
