PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Providence's mayor is heading to the White House to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Rhode Island Public Radio reports ( http://bit.ly/IqGqGM) that Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) has been invited by President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama to a Cinco de Mayo party Thursday afternoon.
A spokesman for the mayor says he is headed to Washington on Wednesday. No taxpayer funds will be spent on the trip. It is being paid for with campaign money.
The Mexican holiday marks the victory by Mexican forces over the French in 1862.
Taveras, the son of Dominican immigrants, is the city's first Latino mayor.
The station reports that Taveras is also due to meet with the White House director of intergovernmental affairs while he is in the nation's capital.
