Netroots Nation conference opens in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A national conference of progressive activists and journalists that is expected to bring thousands to Providence is underway.
The Netroots Nation conference opened Thursday at the Rhode Island Convention Center downtown. A spokeswoman for the group says that between 2,700 and 3,000 people are expected to attend.
Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and activist Van Jones are scheduled to address the convention.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) is among the speakers for Thursday evening's opening keynote session. He has said the city will shine during the annual four-day event.
Tourism officials estimate the gathering will generate about $3.5 million for the city's economy.
The conference runs through Sunday.
