WOONSOCKET, R.I.—The state commission overseeing Woonsocket's finances has approved school officials' request to recall up to 63 city teachers who were laid off earlier this year.

The Woonsocket Call reports ( http://bit.ly/NdB5Df) that the state-appointed Budget Commission approved the School Department's request on Monday, but said selection for a position doesn't guarantee employment in the next school year.

Schools Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan told the commission last week that the laid-off teachers needed to be recalled immediately to fill state-mandated positions and other vacancies.

Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist is considering a request to take control of city schools as the Budget Commission drafts a spending plan that would allow the city to avoid receivership.

The city is facing potential bankruptcy because of a $10 million school budget deficit.
