RI jewelry maker purchases winery
CRANSTON, R.I.—The Rhode Island-based jewelry maker Alex and Ani has purchased a local winery and opened a coffee shop in what company executives say is a natural expansion for the rapidly growing company.
The company announced Thursday that it has bought the 170-acre Sakonnet Vineyards in Little Compton. The nearly $8.5 million purchase also includes 70 acres of nearby land.
Alex and Ani president Carolyn Rafaelian (ra-FAY'-lee-in) says the winery and the jewelry company make a "perfect pairing."
The company has also opened a coffee shop named Teas and Javas in Providence's Wayland Square.
Alex and Ani, which has grown quickly since it was founded in 2004, is based in Cranston. Its products are made of recycled materials and are manufactured in the United States.
