RI girl attends kids' 'state dinner' in Washington
WASHINGTON—A 12-year-old Cranston girl is joining more than 50 other kids from around the nation for the first kids' "state dinner," a luncheon hosted by first lady Michelle Obama.
Caroline Cowart landed the invitation after winning Mrs. Obama's Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, which asked children and their parents to create original, nutritious recipes representing each of the food groups.
Caroline's recipe was for a broccoli and cheese egg white omelet. There were more than 1,200 entries and 54 winners.
Caroline is a seventh-grader at Western Hills Middle School.
The White House says it will post live updates and pictures of the event at https://twitter.com/letsmove.
The contest is a partnership with Epicurious.com and the departments of Education and Agriculture. It also supports the campaign against childhood obesity.
