WARWICK, R.I.—A state official says T.F. Green Airport is revising safety improvement plans on its secondary runway to cut costs.

The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/yXauJR) that Peter A. Frazier, interim president of the Rhode Island Airport Corp., says safety improvements were estimated to cost $70 million.

It climbed to $110 million, up 57 percent, following more detailed cost estimates. Frazier said that's considerably beyond what would be a practical investment by the Federal Aviation Administration or T.F. Green.

He says a revised proposal will deliver nearly the same safety improvements at a cost of $42 million.

The airport is saving money by not buying properties that would have been in the way, deferring relocation of a taxiway and reducing the impact on wetlands.

Frazier says the changes will not affect plans to extend the airport's main runway.
