The highly critical independent report on the MBTA and its finances released this month has reignited questions about one of Deval Patrick’s picks for a new transportation board that is one of the most powerful panels in the state.

About a half-dozen MBTA inspectors crouched inside a dark and sooty Red Line tunnel Wednesday afternoon, banging and clanging away on the rails to make sure nothing was loose or out of joint.

Next stop: low-cost diesel rail?

Commuter rail service is not great for quick trips in the city because it takes too long to catch a train. The more convenient alternatives, new trolleys and subway lines, take years to build and can cost billions of dollars, a problem for neighborhoods like Dorchester and Allston that have been clamoring for better public transportation.
