New detour information -- noon, July 19

Posted by Mac July 19, 2006 01:09 PM

For reasons we can only guess because no one official has contacted us, drivers are no longer being routed from I-93 north to Exit 26 (Storrow Dr.) to Leverett Circle and back into the I-93 southbound tunnel to the Callahan Tunnel exit. We're assuming this has to do with the afternoon Red Sox game, a concert on the Esplanade (smart!) and the Village People concert at City Hall Plaza (even smarter!!).

We had to find out from someone driving the new detour, which takes you (gulp!) over the Tobin Bridge and on to Beacon Street (yow!) in Chelsea (not the most flowing of cities) to Logan. Here are the specific directions, but we're a bit baffled. A better route, by the way, would be to take I-93 north further to Route 16 and take it all the way to Route 1A, but we're not in charge.

To Logan Airport and East Boston from Inside Route 128:

From the South:

Take I-93 North to Exit 23 and follow Logan Airport detour signs on surface streets. Take either a left or a right at split at the top of the ramp.

Left: Continue straight onto North Street. Travel towards Congress Street (Faneuil Hall on left). Turn right on Congress. Turn right onto New Chardon Street and travel to Logan Airport/Route 1A through tunnel on-ramp to Callahan Tunnel.

Right: Turn left at signals onto Cross Street. Continue north through four more signals. At the fifth signal opposite Thatcher Street take a left. Continue south in left lane through the signal at the New Chardon Street intersection to Logan Airport/Route 1A through tunnel on-ramp to Callahan Tunnel.

OR

Follow I-93 North over Leonard Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. Exit left at Exit 27, Route 1 North/Tobin Bridge. Cross Tobin and take first exit, Beacon Street/Chelsea Waterfront. Follow orange Logan Airport detour message boards and signs to access Logan Airport.

From the North: No Detours, use I-93 South to Exit 24B (Airport) or Route 1A South to Logan Airport.

From the West:

Take I-90 East to Exit 24B to I-93 North and use Exit 23. Follow Logan Airport detour signs on surface streets.

OR

Take I-90 East to Exit 24B to I-93 North. Follow I-93 North over Leonard Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. Exit left at Exit 27, Route 1 North/Tobin Bridge. Cross Tobin and take first exit, Beacon Street/Chelsea Waterfront. Follow orange Logan Airport detour message boards and signs to access Logan Airport.

A third alternate route is to take I-90 Eastbound to Exit 18 (Allston/Cambridge) to Storrow Drive and follow I-93 South to Exit 24B (Airport). (Height restrictions apply.)

To Logan Airport and East Boston from Outside Route 128:
Seek alternate routes including I-95 (Route 128) North to I-93 South to Exit 24B (Airport) or Route 1A South to Logan Airport.

From Logan Airport/1A to I-90 West and I-93 North & South:
