Sorrow
Whenever we spellcheck our column, Storrow is alway mistaken for the word sorrow. Maybe this is why.
Back to the issue of parking on Storrow Drive during Hatch Shell events, our old chestnut. The latest news is that the Department of Conservation and Recreation was moving back the time parking could start to help ease the traffic burden on Storrow Drive and Leverett Circle after the tunnel collapse and resulting detours.
We were curious if the state, especially the now all-powerful Massachusetts Highway Department, would like to seek a permanent change to this strange practice, especially since we heard it was the city and state that asked DCR to push the parking back later.
"Your email seems to suggest that there is a push to end parking on Storrow altogether for these events," replied MassHighway spokesman Jon Carlisle in an email. "That is not correct."
"Following communication with this office and Boston Transportation, Commissioner [Luisa] Paiewonsky called over to DCR to request a later start to parking along Storrow Drive during a recent Hatch Shell-area event. The Red Sox were in town, and traffic was anticipated to be especially heavy in light of the Artery closures. We wanted to take additional steps to ensure that traffic would flow as smoothly as possible. DCR accommodated our request and started permitting Storrow Drive parking at a later hour.
"So this was a singular event rather than an ongoing push to end this practice altogether," he wrote.
Foiled again.
