MONTPELIER — Former Vermont legislator Edgar May, who was awared a Pulitzer Prize during his earlier career at the Buffalo Evening News, has died.
He was 83.
Mr. May’s sister, former governor Madeleine Kunin, told Vermont Public Radio that Mr. May had a stroke about three weeks ago and died Thursday in Tucson, where he kept a winter home.
During the 1960s, Mr. May worked as a reporter at the Buffalo Evening News and won a Pulitzer Prize for an investigation of New York State’s welfare system.
He later moved to the southern Vermont town of Springfield and was elected to the state House in the 1970s and four times to the Senate in the 1980s.
He served as chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the Senate.
