BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont woman who admitted she was distracted by a text message while driving when she hit a pedestrian has been sentenced to 30 days in jail, followed by five months of home confinement.

Emma Vieira of Colchester pleaded guilty in October to gross negligent operation with serious injury resulting. She reached a deal with prosecutors that limited her jail time.

Fifty-two-year-old Deborah Drewniak was struck and was severely injured in August 2011 as she walked her dog along a road in Colchester. Her dog was killed.

The 20-year-old Vieira apologized to Drewniak in court.end of story marker
